What is a Laparoscopic Heller Myotomy?
Is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat patients with achalasia. Achalasia is a motility disorder of the esophagus that makes it hard for patients to tolerate solids and eventually liquids. The procedure involves dividing the muscles of the lower esophageal sphincter then performing a partial wrap around the divided muscles to prevent heartburn. The operation’s success rate is high but a small number of patients may need additional treatment.
