What is a Laparoscopic Hernia Repair?
Is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to hernias. A hernia is a gap or space that occurs when the layers of the abdominal muscle have weakened, which often results in a bulge. Most hernia repairs are performed with prosthetic material called mesh which helps reinforce the weakened muscle as the tissue heals. There are many types of hernia
Umbilical Hernia –occurs when part of the bowel or fatty tissue pushes through the abdominal wall muscles around or through the belly button.
Inguinal Hernia – occurs when an organ or fatty tissues pushes through a weak area in the lower abdominal wall.
Ventral or Incisional Hernia –occurs when abdominal contents push through a weak area in the middle of the abdomen that occurs after a prior incision was made for another procedure.
Spigelian Hernia – occurs when abdominal contents push through two groups of muscles on the side of the abdomen. This type of hernia is also referred to as a lateral ventral hernia.
