What is a Laparoscopic & Open Cholecystectomy?
Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder. The gallbladder can be thought of as a small ziplock bag that sits under the liver. The gallbladder stores bile that is produced by the liver. Pain and complications caused by gallstones are the common reasons for removal of the gallbladder. Other causes include biliary dyskinesia or gallbladder cancer. Cholecystectomy can be performed either laparoscopically, using a video camera, or through a open surgical procedure.
