What is Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication and Hiatal Hernia Repair?
Is a (minimally invasive) surgical procedure used for patients who have long standing heartburn whose symptoms that cannot be managed with medications. The goal of this procedure is to restore the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve between the esophagus and the stomach) by wrapping the stomach around the esophagus. A hiatal hernia repair involves repairing a defect in the diaphragm then tightening the diaphragmatic opening with stitches and sometimes mesh.
